Another very important Christmas tradition is gifting. People are not sure about the origins of this tradition. However Christmas is considered to be a festival of giving and this might be what has led to the tradition being widely accepted.

| Small children believe that it is Santa Clause or Father Christmas that delivers the gifts, but that is only if they have been well behaved throughout the year. But as these children grow up they will soon come to realize that it is their parents and other family members who buy the gifts and leave them there for them to open on Christmas day. Some children even leave out milk and cookies for Santa Clause on Christmas Eve, but then of course the parents have to wake up in the middle of the night to have a cookie or two and a sip of the milk so the children believe that Santa Clause was really there and enjoyed the snacks they left him! Santa Clause is believed to come down the chimney at night when everyone is sleeping and place the gifts where they belong, if the house has no chimney, mom and dad have to leave the door unlocked so that he can get in. |
